Philip Dick

Philip Kindred Dick (Chicago 16 dicembre 1928 - 2 marzo 1982), scrittore di fantascienza.

Uno dei più importanti autori della fantascienza moderna, le sue opere sono caratterizzate da un generale senso di pessimismo, da una profonda attenzione posta sui problemi psicologici dei vari personaggi e soprattutto dalla continua domanda su come i concetti di amore, umanità e il concetto di Dio possano sopravvivere ed evolversi nel futuro. Spesso nei suoi racconti sono presenti elementi che all'epoca sembravano futuristici ma che al giorno d'oggi sono realtà. Ha scritto una grande quantità di racconti brevi, molti dei quali sono diventati spunto per film famosi come Atto di Forza (Total Recall) o Minority Report.

A partire dagli anni Sessanta iniziò a scrivere romanzi completi, creando capolavori che ancora oggi sono punti di riferimento nella fantascienza moderna, come La svastica sul sole o Do androids dream of electric sheep? titolo particolarmente importante per essere stato l'ispirazione del famosissimo cult-movie Blade Runner edito in italia con tre differenti titoli Cacciatore di Androidi (1971, poi 1986), Blade Runner (1996) e Ma gli androidi sognano pecore elettriche? (2000). Altro importante titolo è Ubik che è stato scritto sia in versione romanzo che in versione sceneggiatura cinematografica, anche se per ora non ne è mai stato tratto un film.

Adattamenti cinematografici dei lavori di Philip K. Dick

Il romanzo Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? è stato reso nel film Blade Runner (1982).
Il film Total Recall (1990) era basato su una sua storia breve (We Can Remember It For You Wholesale)
Il film Screamers (1995) era basato su una sua storia breve Second Variety.
Alcune scene di The Terminator, e l'idea della guerra futura dove androidi assassini cercano di intrufolarsi nei rifugi camuffandosi da esseri umani, rimandano in modo chiaro a Second Variety, nonostante la nessun riferimento sia stato fatto nei titoli del film. L'altra grande opera che ha ispirato The Terminator sembra essere stata la storia breve di Harlan Ellison Soldier.
Il film (del 2000 ma rilasciato nel 2002) Impostor è basato su una sua storia dallo stesso nome, come peraltro una serie di telefilm degli anni 60.
Il film di Steven Spielberg Minority Report (2002) è basato su una storia breve di Dick che porta lo stesso titolo.
Il film francese Confessions d'un Barjo (1992 - di Jérôme Boivin) è basata su Confessions of a Crap Artist.
La "composizione personale" di Dick Strange Memories of Death è stata adattata nell'omonimo cortometraggio da parte degli Yates House Studios, ma il film non è stato ancora distribuito.
Paycheck, diretto da John Woo, è tratto dal romanzo di Dick.
Un adattamento cinematografico di A Scanner Darkly è in produzione. Diretto da Richard Linklater, e con protagonisti Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, e Robert Downey Jr..
Rumours del 2003 parlano di una sceneggiatura scritta dallo scrittore Brandon M. Easton per The Man in the High Castle (La svastica sul sole)
