La 74a edizione delle cerimonia di premiazione degli Oscar si è tenuta il 24 marzo 2002 a Los Angeles, per la prima vvolta al Kodak Theater. La conduttrice della serata è stata l'attrice statunitense Whoopi Goldberg.
Le nomination dei film in concorso - che, in base al regolamento, sono stati immessi sul circuito cinematografico nell'anno precedente, il 2001 - erano state rese pubbliche il 12 febbraio 2002.
Gli attori Sidney Poitier e Robert Redford hanno ricevuto il prestigioso Oscar alla carriera.
Per l'Italia arriva l'Oscar per il miglior montaggio a Pietro Scalia per Black Hawk Down di Ridley Scott.
